    Good evening Mr. Chris Montignani, what was supposed to be a simple race on grass turned out to be a difficult and demanding event which saw mud as the protagonist; everyone gave their best in this not easy test but allow me to give particular praise the young and small lion Alfie who, like last year, in very different terrain conditions, managed to confirm himself as a true future promise in this difficult and certainly not comfortable sporting discipline. As always, the commentary and video footage were excellent.

      Thanks again Gianluigi yes it was a very difficult two days for everybody that took part but we still raised £12,400 for two of Northern Ireland’s local charities so it was worth all the effort in the end.

    Looks like a lot of fun. I have one question, is the starter job a volunteer job? Or do they draw lots, and the looser gets the job? That poor guy gets roosted on all day.

    • @monticlassictv
      @monticlassictv 9 днів тому

      Yes HDBee all track marshalling including start gate duties are all voluntary and most do it for the love of the sport, but trying to get marshals to volunteer is always a problem with Classic racing here in the UK although the Northern Ireland Club do look after their marshals on race day with food etc.

    Wow. A piece of my teenage years returns. I grew up in Stevenage New Town and attended Hatfield technical Grammar School at the time Duncan was building this bike. It would have been around 1962 when I worked at his shop in Albert Street in the Old Town on weekends and days that I ditched school. At first I was mostly draining the crankcases of Quickly mopeds that the owners thought had seized. They had usually left the fuel petcock on so the petrol had drained down into the crankcase and filled it so the piston could not go all the way down. Duncan charged them five quid for the repair and I got the free petrol for my bike. The shop was called Moto Decla, and that's what the four cylinder bike was called. Duncan discovered I was quite adept at the lathe and I turned some of the pistons used in the four cylinder bikes. The cylinder bores were about the same size as my thumb! I bought and raced a 50cc Itom with my earnings and would accompany Duncan up to Snetterton to test his and his customers race bikes, usually on a Thursday. My job there was to run rebuilt bikes in for a lap or two, pull the head and cylinder and scrape any high spots showing on the pistons from uneven heat expansion, rebuild and repeat. This way we could prevent the pistons seizing on race days. Pistons alloys were poor then and they expanded inconsistently when hot. I got to ride the four a few times on those days. I believe the bike then had the cylinders set in a more vertical position and the tank was much narrower than the one on the bike in Sammy's museum. There may have been two bikes built as I worked on two different engines, alternating modifications so we could fall back a level if a modification made the performance worse. I remember this clearly as on one occasion when Duncan was trying some alcohol in the fuel in an attempt to reduce cylinder temperatures. I had the two outer spark plugs blow out and hit he in the chest while at speed on the Norwich straight! It looked like I had four nipples when I took my T shirt off. Duncan was always living hand to mouth until what seemed like a great opportunity killed the business and I went off to a career in computing and lost touch. He was approached by a company called Lubysil that were producing an oil additive that claimed to reduce engine friction. They had supplied some to Cooper cars who where quite pleased with the resulting lower engine temperatures. This bloke from Lubysil tried to get Duncan to add it to our bikes oil, not understanding that two strokes get their oil in the fuel, not from a sump or oil tank. Anyway, I tried some in my Itom and it seemed to rev a little higher. So I tried daubing the additive on the crankshaft pinion and roasting it in a small electric oven we had. That worked even better. We thought this might be a significant benefit to the four. By the way, Duncan also built a 50cc four stroke twin as well as a 50cc four valve single prototype engine that never saw the inside of a frame as far as I know. Duncan then went off to meetings with the Lubysil people who wanted to sponsor Moto Decla bikes. The company was Canadian and were trying to enter the European market and do what STP was doing in the USA. The next I heard was that a factory was being built in south Wales, the foundations were already being built, and Duncan offered me a job with him down there. He made several financial commitments based upon the Lubysil promises so I was very interested. Then everything crashed and burned. Lubysil was sued by another oil company, possibly STP(?), over patent infringement issues and they completely disappeared off the face of the earth as far as Duncan was concerned. He was left high and dry financially. He'd cancelled the rental agreement for the Albert Street shop and had to find another place very quickly. He called me a few weeks later to come and visit his new 'shop', a basement off the York Road near Kings Cross Station in London. He had his machines crammed into a small space that was possibly even smaller than the basement of the shop in Albert Street, at least it felt that to me. He wanted to know if I could work there while he tried to find out what was happening with the Lubysil deal. But the basement was not suitable as a machine shop. It must have been a few feet away from the Piccadilly underground line. Every few minutes the whole floor would shake as a tube-train went past. I said it was not practical because of the vibrations making precision machining impossible so we left it that he'd contact me again when he was better setup. Soon after I had a serious motorcycle accident and spent six months in plaster. I was very lucky not to lose my right leg but got a well paying job with ICT (International Computers Limited) while still on crutches and never looked back. If Duncan called I never heard about it, but it's possible he called. I was still living at home, so my mother could have filtered any messages. She had been unaware I was even racing bikes until the accident. She just thought I worked at the Moto Decla shop, and I had never told her any differently. While at ICT I swapped my Itom for a shed load of Vincent parts. Literally, a shed full of Comet parts. The bloke had worked at the Vincent factory and 'harvested' a pile of parts when they closed. I cherry picked a complete set and assembled a nice 500cc Comet after checking all the serial number with the police and the Hertfordshire County vehicle registration office to be sure nothing was stolen. Shortly after that I traded the Vinny for a used Ford Anglia and didn't ride bikes again until after i was married. I now live in the USA and ride my 1976 Benelli 750 SEI, my second one, only occasionally. The six pipes on the Benelli sound fantastic, but it cannot match the shriek of the four tiny expansion chambers on the 50cc Moto Decla four. I'd love to hear it run again. These comments are four years late, and quite long, but you may find them interesting as they flesh out the Moto Decla Four story a bit more. If anyone reading this knows what happened to Duncan following this sad Lubysil situation I'd be interested to read about it. He was a curmudgeonly individual with a wry sense of humor who I enjoyed being around. He helped me get started on motorcycles and entered me in my first race at Crystal Palace in London. I only knew him for a couple of years but I have a lifetimes worth of hilarious stories from that period of my early life. I hope life got better for him after York Road.

      Hi Philip firstly thanks for taking the time to put your story together which is full of valuable information and background on the great man, and it would’ve been great to have had all of that valuable information to hand when I originally put this short clip together. And I must say when I originally visited Sammy’s museum which was a few years ago now of all of the fantastic bikes and history that’s contained within it I found this bike to be the most interesting and intriguing mainly due to its superb engineering and construction, but my one regret was that I was unable to hear it running. But thanks again for your story and if I ever get around to doing an updated version of Duncan’s bike I’ll surely get in touch.
